09:13 am: Oh hell no...
http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/blogs/beltway-confidential/Hope-and-change--and-childrens-books-52601372.html

This is just %*^&ing stupid.

Do the world a favor, pick out one or more of your favorite children's books, go find a copy, and give it to a kid.

I'm with Tam, this kinda crap is shoot-worthy.

To quote a favorite: "When any government, or any church for that matter, undertakes to say to its subjects, 'This you may not read, this you may not see, this you are forbidden to know,' the end result is tyranny and oppression, no matter how holy the motives. Mighty little force is needed to control a man whose mind has been hoodwinked; contrariwise, no amount of force can control a free man, a man whose mind is free. No, not the rack, not fission bombs, not anything--you can't conquer a free man; the most you can do is kill him." - Robert Heinlein

Emphasis mine.

03:40 pm: Everything I thought it could be...
Spent yesterday at the range with several of my co-workers. The undisputed highlight of the day was Chief bringing the Department's Thompson Model 1928 along. And yes, it is an original, and yes I do mean _full auto_ :)

Today my back and legs and feet are killing me from being on my feet almost all day, but it was definitely worth it. This job has it's perks, even if it is annoying sometimes.

But he's exactly right. It is a "sign of subservience". It may be a sign of religion too, but not the kind anyone should support.

Now that's a political party I could get behind. Maybe the Libertarians or the Constitution Party should adopt this idea.

05:03 am: Even the Russians know we're screwed...
http://english.pravda.ru/opinion/columnists/107459-0/

While there are some obvious factual errors (Congress isn't whimpering, they're in collusion), generally, they've pretty much nailed the situation. I can only hope that the conclusion that "The proud American will go down into his slavery with out a fight, beating his chest and proclaiming to the world, how free he really is" is also in error.

I should have thought of this, being a Heinlein fan, but thankfully someone did:

11:59 pm: So help me, God.
I, Russell David Humphress, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America, against all enemies, foreign and domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same, and that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion, pledging my life, my fortune, and my sacred honor. So help me, God.
